Werder Bremen (also known as SV Werder Bremen) is a professional German football club based in Bremen, Germany. Werder Bremen was founded in 1899 by a group of high school students who had won a prize of sports equipment. One year later, Werder Bremen was the first German football club to hire a professional coach in 1922.

In 1961 Werder Bremen won its first German Cup and they performed well enough to become a charter member of the German Bundesliga and even won the championship in the second season. In the 1967/68 season; Werder Bremen finished in the 2nd position but in the following 12 years, the team finished at the lower half of the table. Werder Bremen was relegated from the Bundesliga for the first and only time for the 1980/81 season after finishing in the 17th place in the 1979/80 season.

In order to recover the team, a new coach was hired to save the day and Werder Bremen was on its road to success again. Werder Bremen achieved Bundesliga runners-up in 1983, 1985 and 1986, champions in 1988, wining the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1992, 3rd Bundesliga title in 1993, 3rd German Cup in 1994.

Shortly after the new coach departure in 1995, Werder Bremen began sliding towards relegation. In 1999 Thomas Schaaf was hired as the new coach and stopped the team's slide. The new coach has managed to lead Werder Bremen to a cup victory only weeks later and the team performance stabilized for the following seasons and finished regularly in the upper half of the table.

In 2004 Werder Bremen won both DFB-Pokal and Bundesliga championships; the team was also qualified the 2004/05 Champions League but advanced only until the round of 16. Werder Bremen was again qualified for the Champions League in 2005/06 season and once again advanced to the round of 16.

In the 2006/07 season, Werder Bremen's third place in the Champions League group stage sent the team to the UEFA-Cup where it lost in the semi-finals to Espanyol. In the following season, Werder finished third in the Champions League just like in the previous season.
